Placental blood should not be discarded. It is the property of the baby and belongs in the babies body. The umbilical cord is a lifeline for the baby from the mother until pulmonary oxygenation kicks in. A complete placental infusion can increase the babies blood volume 30% or so and prevent anemia, autism, cerebral palsy and other devastating (and irreversible) childhood conditions. It is a tragic, human rights violation that doctors routinely clamp the cord immediately in light of mounds of scientific data suggesting huge medical complications and not a SHRED of data offering benefits for immediate clamping. The only benefit is shaving 10-20 minutes off the procedure for the doctor. As for banking the blood, the odds are minuscule that your child will ever be able to actually use it. Do some research before you bank blood that nature designed your baby to have in his body NOW.
